In 2004, a protected area was established on the basis of the territory of the fishing company UAB „Birvėtos tvenkiniai“, which consists of 33 ponds – the Birvėtos Biosphere Reserve, intended for the protection of the breeding grounds of whooper swans, terns, black grouse, black grouse, little gulls and migratory white-fronted geese.
