Education "Let the Gardens of Heaven Rotate"

Great news for Ignalina, Meikštai, and all of Lithuania!

The expert commission of the “Culture Pass” has recognized another of our library’s educational programs as high-quality and added it to the official list. We are happy, proud, and excited to share that upper-grade students can now register and personally experience the world of straw gardens.

The educational program "Let the Gardens of Heaven Rotate" invites participants to discover the tradition of straw garden making – one of the four Lithuanian cultural values inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In the Meikštai Straw Garden Room, operating for the third year, young visitors will not only learn the history of this tradition but also experience the magic of these creations up close – through storytelling, hands-on creation, and an authentic encounter with this unique national craft.

What awaits the participants?

– A story about the centuries-old straw garden tradition, its symbolism, and meaning;
– A guided introduction to the permanent exhibition in Meikštai;
– Creative workshops where students will learn to tie traditional elements such as the reketukas and the star, and will explore innovative solutions;
– Development of creativity, fine motor skills, accuracy, cultural awareness, and aesthetic perception.

The program is led by senior Meikštai librarian Jolanta Žuromskienė – a guardian of the straw garden tradition, participant and laureate of the “Aukso vainikas” competition, and an ambassador of regional folk heritage. Her sessions are based on authentic crafts, clear methods, and meaningful student engagement in the creative process.
