PHILIP GLASS | JUSTĖ JANULYTĖ | RYTIS MAŽULIS

Concerts

April 17th at Paliesius Manor – eight cellos, one pianist, hypnotic, pulsating music by Philip Glass and two works by Lithuanian composers related to the tradition of minimalism.

The program focuses on American composer Philip Glass's Dracula suite for cello octet and piano. In this concert, Cello Club will perform for the first time in this composition - the ensemble, which has grown to an octet, will play together with pianist Indre Baikštyte. This version for cello octet and piano was created by Philip Glass's long-time companion, pianist and conductor Michael Riesman. The work creates a slow, hypnotic sound field - a pulsating, layered structure, the dramaturgy of which develops through slowly changing, varied repetitions.

The work was born in the late 20th century, when Universal Pictures invited Ph. Glass to create a new soundtrack for Todd Browning's classic 1931 film Dracula. Since the original version of the film had almost no music, the composer chose a string quartet instrumentation – a chamber composition that allows for both intimate and tense emotional field, avoiding direct genre clichés. This music was first performed in collaboration with the legendary ensemble Kronos Quartet.

Alongside Ph. Glass, the music program will feature works by Lithuanian composers Justė Janulytė and Rytis Mažulis – two compositions related to the tradition of minimalism, yet different. In J. Janulytė’s work “Unanime”, the cello octet is perceived as a single organism – a single, breathing sound body, in which individual lines dissolve in a common timbral flow. Meanwhile, R. Mažulis’ “Circulatio” is based on the principle of cyclical movement – repetitions, rotation and a precisely organized course, which takes on a living, pulsating form during performance. Both works in their own way extend the same idea of music as a constantly changing system, developing in the flow of time.
