On February 16, 2018, in Linkmenys, next to the Linkmenys Holy Trinity Church, a memorial stone was solemnly unveiled to the border guards who guarded the demarcation line between Lithuania and Poland in 1923–1939.
The monument was erected on the site where the administrative line with the Polish-occupied Vilnius region once ran. This line was guarded by the Lithuanian Border Police. The officers had to perform a difficult and dangerous service here, as it was a temporary border between the recently warring states. Lithuania never recognized this line as a state border, marking it only with simple wooden markers, which were often dug up at the initiative of the Poles, which led to conflicts more than once. Our border guards have also suffered from this.
