In homesteads between forests and waters. Architectural excursion by car around Aukštaitija nac. park

Excursions

For centuries, a unique cultural space has developed in the land of lakes, surrounded by forests, which we see today in Aukštaitija National Park. The old ethnographic villages, as if they had fallen from the Ginučiai mound, preserved the memory of how they were built in the clearings of the forests and on the shores of the waters, as well as adapted to the playful terrain and shore profiles. In the ethnographic villages you can see the archaic structures of the villages and admire the unique tradition of wooden architecture - wisely formed spaces of courtyards and buildings, powerful roof volumes and sensitive artistic decoration. These forms hide their secrets: the reflections of the old worldview fade as the sun illuminates the walls, we can still hear the whispers of mythical creatures in the furnaces. The spaces of the old homesteads and their invisible inhabitants are guarded by a solid field of memory, manifested in the form of architecture and mythology.

After this incredibly rich world of old wooden architecture, we invite you to travel with the architect, art critic dr. Aistė Andriušyte and mythologist dr. Daiva Vaitkevičienė. During the tour you will visit ethnographic villages (Šuminus, Strazdus, Vaišnoriškė, Salas II), admire the landscape of lakes from Ladakalnis. Enjoying the harmony of culture and nature, you will learn what makes the old villages attractive and what creates their special spirit.
