In three buildings in the city of Ignalina, which are protected by the state and included in the Cultural Heritage Register, fighters for Lithuanian freedom were imprisoned and tortured in 1944-1953.

This is marked by special signs. The former agricultural board building housed the NKVD office at the time, a smaller building next door housed the detention center, and the house on the other side of the road, where the municipal housing is now located, housed the prison.

The remains of brutally tortured people were simply dumped in the square. Now, a green meadow and a memorial stone To Those Who Died for the Freedom of Lithuania stand at that place.
