Tverečius St. Trinity Church

In Tverečius in 1501, the first wooden church was built, and regular penitential canons were settled. Trakai voivode Mikalojus Pacas built a new church and monastery in 1662. The Russian government closed the monastery in 1832. A new wooden church was built in place of the one that burned down in 1862. Through the efforts of pastor Jonas Burba, a brick church was designed in 1884, but the government did not allow it to be built. When government permission was not needed, engineer B. Kokijevskis–Kozėla designed the current brick church in 1898. It was built in 1906 with the efforts of pastor Antanas Slapšys–Slapšinskas and with the funds of parishioners.

Tverečius Holy Trinity Church is neo–Gothic, rectangular in plan, with two towers, with a lower apse. The interior is basilican, with 3 naves separated by pillars, vaulted. The churchyard fence is made of stone masonry. During the First World War, the church towers were destroyed, and in 1925 they were repaired.

The works of art in the church – the paintings „Mykolas Giedraitis“, „Apostle Judas Tadas“, „St. Magdalene“, „The Miracle of St. John Kant“ „Monk with a Pitcher“) and the sculptures „St. Christopher“, „Unknown Saint“, „Christ Carrying the Cross“ – are cultural monuments.

In July, the Feast of St. Anne is held in the Holy Trinity Church in Tverečius.
